Copyediting and On-screen Editing

Copyeditors ensure that your message and meaning are clear and engaging. We will examine your work for syntax, brevity, redundancies, lapses in tone and style and we will reword cumbersome phrasing. We check facts within the realm of general knowledge and create a style sheet for each project.

We will check your work for
grammar
spelling
usage
punctuation
style
accuracy
consistency.

We will edit on-screen based on your preference. This simple process means that materials supplied by e-mail or on disk can be edited on a computer so that no paper has to be generated. Changes are input on-screen during the process thus saving you a step later on.

Using word-processing features, the revisions and notes can be included as part of the file. You can make the final decision to input them or not. Editing on-screen tends to be slower than on hard copy, however, many of our clients consider it to be more efficient overall.

Send your copyediting or proofreading job to us by e-mail at info@doublespace.org or call us at (416) 516-2292. Additional information regarding orders and the submission of materials is on our Ordering page.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the last step in the editorial process. Experienced writers and respected publishers agree that employing a professional proofreader is essential. We will capture typos, spacing glitches and numerous other inconsistencies that can undermine your hard work — and cause readers to question your competency.

As proofreaders we will
• check that copyediting changes were made
• mark typographical mistakes
• correct grammar, spelling, usage, punctuation, style, typography, folios, cross references and formatting (including tables, margins, alignment, styles, colour, design and the style and numbering of heading levels)
• prepare a style sheet if necessary.

Writing, Rewriting and Plain Language

Contact double space for original writing or development and rewriting based on your material and research. Once we have established your writing objectives we will advise you about how best to meet your goals. In the case of specialized subject areas and extensive writing requirements, we will work with professional writers knowledgeable in your genre or specific subject area.

Our plain language editing and writing services are aimed at creating effective documents that will be easily understood by their intended audience. Plain language involves not only the use of clear, concise language and appropriate reading level but well-organized layout and design of materials.
